Thanks to Russell for pointing this out, in the Feb 8th issue. I made Pseuds Corner – and not for the first time, I might add.
I also appear briefly in the review of Constance Briscoe’s Beyond Ugly. The reason I’m flagging up such a tiny thing is that the writer echoes my own feelings, which frankly are about to overflow on the subject, and will appear in a future post.
Having found the book bemusingly dull, and commented on the increasingly hysterical misery memoir genre in general, the writer goes on to say this:
There is a sense, anyway, that this seam is close to being worked out. It’s been interesting to see in the reviews of Tania Glyde’s new book about her alcoholism a vague sense of ennui, as though someone drinking enough vodka to flood a small town was no longer quite enough to satisfy the jaded readerly palate. You can see now why the likes of James Frey make half of it up: there’s little chance of being noticed otherwise.
Thank you Mr/Ms critic, you’ve hit the nail on the head. I would write more, but my left hand is dragging behind and in danger of slowing me down.
