Heavy drinking is one of our national pastimes, and women are fast overtaking men, regardless of background or upbringing. Tania was an ordinary middle class girl; nobody’s stereotype of the dirty, shouting alcoholic. Exposing the culpability of the drinks industry, the enabling qualities of Class As and our powerful sense of entitlement to go out and have it large until we fall over, Cleaning Up examines a moral panic of our time, exploring why women drink, how to stop and what life after alcohol is really like.
Tania Glyde was immersed in Britain’s drink culture for 23 years before a car crash of life events finally forced her to stop. Like so many people, she sometimes wondered if she had a problem, but as a clock-watching 6pm-er who hardly ever threw up in public, and never fell asleep on the train, by general standards she was fine – even though she was hung over nearly every day of her adult life.
